With the economy like it is I have had to cut back on some of the conferences I like to attend. Last year I decided to choose just one event. The one I chose was the VA League Retreat. There were many reasons why I picked this one but the two most important reasons were that I felt I would have a greater return on my investment, and well, it was Florida in February! Of course the main reason I went was to have some face time with Candy and Lanel. Two people who have been very successful in the VA world.
Before our arrival we were asked to think of one major thing we wanted to accomplish for our business while there. I thought about several things I needed to do and decided to focus my time on my website. My goal was to walk away with a much improved site.
After arriving at the house and getting my things put away I was able to just relax. Seriously, if you are having a retreat in February what better place to do it than sunny Florida? Having it in a house instead of a hotel was great too! We were actually able to sit and be ourselves and work in an entirely relaxed atmosphere. I only put on shoes when we went out to eat!
By the next day when we got started, I was feeling very comfortable around those I didn’t know previously and volunteered to be the first one in the hot seat. Yes, it was a little scary to sit there and have everyone in the room critique you and give you their honest opinion of your work, in this case my website. But I took the constructive criticism and went off to the patio to work on the suggested changes. I personally spent most of my time out on the patio. My work area was a lounge chair on the opposite side of the pool from everyone else. I sat with my laptop and worked on making improvements to my site. Something that I never would have taken the time to do at home. We had a check-in after lunch then while some attendees continued their own projects, others decided to work on the Get Clients Now program. It was great to be able to work on what I needed for myself, not just given many different ideas that I didn’t have time to implement when I returned home.
Day two was pretty much the same. Other people were in the hotseat in the morning and we broke out as individuals or in small groups to continue our work. Once again in the afternoon we had the Get Clients Now group. With Lanel being a licensed facilitator of the program, she got everyone off to a great start so that they were able to continue the program once they went home.
I know many of you are like I am, you spend most of your time working on your client’s business and do not take the time to improve your own. This retreat gave me the ability to turn off the rest of the world for a few days and make improvements to my own business. I even came home relaxed and not stressed out from having just spent several days at a conference.
So yes, I will be returning to the retreat in 2014! I’m not sure yet which project I will be working on for my business yet, but I know whatever I decide I will have help and support from the others at the retreat and walk away having accomplished something and feeling renewed about my business!
